New York, NY (Jul 27, 2010) - On its six and a half anniversary, Virgil Films & Entertainment is proud to present a brand new Special Edition DVD of one of the most popular, successful and talked-out documentaries ever made. Super Size Me (2004) documents how Oscar® nominated filmmaker, Morgan Spurlock, went on a quest to expose the obesity problem facing America and to show how fast food restaurants-the McDonald’s chain, in particular-have played their part in this epidemic. Spurlock’s method? Subsisting solely on meals from McDonald’s for 30 days in a row, forcing himself to eat three McDonald’s meals a day, trying every offering on the chain’s extensive menu at least once, and “super-sizing” his meal if it was offered to him. The final results-coupled with the filmmaker’s ongoing travels across the U.S. to examine the business and culture surrounding the nation’s fast-food industry and to attempt to gain an interview the executives at McDonald’s-are, at the same time, very serious, very personal, and very, very funny! Outfitted with more than one hour of new DVD supplemental features, Super Size Me: Special Edition will be available on DVD on September 28, 2010, for a suggested retail price of $19.99.

Newly produced DVD special features on Super Size Me: Special Edition include the following:
–The 10 most asked questions about the film
–A Morgan Spurlock speaking engagement and Q&A with students at New Jersey’s Rider College

Nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature in 2005, Super Size Me is one of the highest-grossing documentaries of all time, holding its own alongside Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004) and the French nature documentary March of the Penguins (2005). More importantly, Super Size Me is the film that “inspired” McDonald’s to wipe the term “super size” off its menus six weeks after the movie’s premiere (though the fast food giant claims that that the changes had nothing to do with the film). Either way, the impact of Super Size Me across the nation is undeniable and it truly elevates its status to “A Film of Epic Proportions.”
“We were very pleased that high schools and middle schools everywhere began showing Super Size Me in health classes teaching younger kids to make good choices,” states Spurlock. “If we continue to watch our health and diet, we can curb obesity and become a healthier society. Hopefully, through the DVD we can reach many more people.”
Lauded as being “zippy, laugh-out-loud funny, persuasive and at times horrifying” by The Chicago Tribune, “an anti-junk-food screed that manages to entertain even as it informs and alarms” by The Washington Post, “a hugely enjoyable descent into epic gluttony” by Empire Magazine (UK) and as a movie that was “made with obvious passion and humor (and a side of fries)” by Premiere, Super Size Me sunk its teeth into the U.S. before taking a substantial bite out of the world’s marketplace. Following its domestic theatrical release in April, 2004, it rolled out theatrically to more than 40 countries where it became one of the most popular U.S. documentaries to ever dine out in Europe, South America and Asia.

Super Size Me - Synopsis:
In 2003, first-time filmmaker Morgan Spurlock decided it was time to take a serious look at the subject of obesity in the United States, focusing on the business and culture surrounding the nation’s fast-food industry. Spurlock-setting out to study the marketing of fast food to American children and unsuccessfully trying to gain an interview with executives at the fast food giant McDonald’s-attempted to become one of his own subjects. The experiment: over a 30-day period from February to the beginning of March, Spurlock documented his experience of living only on items from the McDonald’s menu, forcing himself to eat three McDonald’s meals a day, trying every offering on the chain’s extensive menu at least once, and “super-sizing” his meal if it was offered to him. As a result, the 32-year-old Spurlock went through some seriously frightening changes-as did his weight, body mass, cholesterol, liver-specific fat accumulation, general moods, and sexual urges. As seen here, the results are very serious, very personal-and very, very funny!
